Martial arts begins and ends with Respect

What is the very first thing we do when we enter the dojo?

We take time to show a perfect bow. Why do we bow when we enter the dojo? .... It’s a sign of respect and appreciation for what we are about to learn that day.

What do we do when we enter and exit the mats? We take time to show a perfect bow.

Why do we bow at the mats? …  It’s a sign of respect for our training area. We are fortunate to have nice mats, that are swept, mopped and disinfected everyday. Mirrors on the walls to check form and many targets to enhance our training.

Bowing in the martial arts is mainly thought of as a sign of respect and appreciation for our training partners and instructors. When we are entering and exiting the dojo and the mat area we should also pause to thank the people that keep our training area clean, the training equipment that we have and the dojo itself.
